Except for the soundtrack, which tries to breathe life into this otherwise contrived and dated story about an old gay man going through a depressing search for meaning in his life. With its extremely slow pace, pseudo-intellectual dialogue, and cartoonish depiction of gay men in the 1950s, the film seems to be trying to show how lost gays were in those years.
Daniel Craig plays the antihero
Drug addicted, sexually impotent, he floats in an unreal world, desperately yearning to find an anchor. He is sad and pathetic.
It could be called “Death in Mexico”
The film can be seen as a trashy version of Luchino Visconti’s famous masterpiece “Death in Venice”. After the highly acclaimed “Call Me by Your Name”, the director seems to be trying to create a new worthwhile work.
