This is a brilliant film, a masterful biography depicting the American tragedy, the other side of the coin of dreams. This is not news, nor a surprise, because for 100 years people have been horrified and in awe of Fitzgerald’s con man Gatsby, who, inspired by his mentor Dan Cody, creates his own “alternative” reality.
But back to the film, which is a brilliant masterpiece in so many ways, from Nixon’s brilliant introduction to the monstrous coming-of-age story, so incredibly played by the two lead actors, Sebastian Stan and Jeremy Strong, who should be considered for an Oscar
Fitzgerald showed the other side of the American dream when it became corrupted in the roaring and ruthless capitalism of the 1920s, and instead of learning from him, Americans are probably about to crown yet another apprentice again, more corrupt and dehumanized than his fictional predecessor from 100 years ago. How sad.
And Ali Abbasi is a fantastic, bold and courageous director, respect!
